Adventure Andalusia &
Mulhacén Peak (3,479m.)
THE ITINERARY
DAY 1
We meet you at Malaga airport and take you to the accommodation in Competa, a journey of about one hour. There should be some time to relax and a couple of drinks before a briefing about the coming days ahead. Axarquia region and Finca Arrijana will be our base for the next week. Welcome dinner at Finca Arrijana included.
DAY 2
One of the most emblematic peaks of the Sierra Almijara a classic climb to the top. Beside the caracteristic shape, this mountain is famous for being the witness of many battles between the Maquis (Spanish guerrillas) and the Civil Guard. There is still a ruin of a Guardia Civil barracks on the top of the Lucero. We start our day with a 4×4 transfer to Puerto Blanquillo (1,200m) from where we begin our walk up to El Lucero. With a bit of luck we can glimpse Mountain Goats, Golden and Bonelli’s Eagles. The views at the top are stunning, huge sweeps of Granada province. On clear days we can see Gibraltar and many miles of the coast of Africa. Packed Lunch and dinner at our Moroccan Restaurant in Cómpeta included.
DAY 3
Today, a 1.5h drive brings us to the village of Benamejí for a 3.5 hours downstream rafting trip on the River Genil. What’s unique about this river is that it is dam-released, meaning the waters are controlled and you can expect a good flow in summer months. We will descend the river on an inflatable raft accompanied by a specialized guide, who will direct the raft together with the team help. This adventure sport will make you feel full of adrenaline, excitement and amusement. There are two levels so you do not need previous experience. Lunch included at a local restaurant.
DAY 4 & 5
The Mulhacén with its 3480m is the roof of Sierra Nevada and the Iberian Peninsula. In a 2 day route we guide you to its top where we can enjoy unbeatable views and sensations. To make it more bearable, we will spend a night at the Mountain Refuge Poqueira (2.500m).
DAY 4
A 1 hour 30 minutes transfer take us to La Alpujarra Mountain region of Granada, we will stop here to visit the local shops and lunch. After the break we will go to Hoya del Portillo (2160m) where we will start our walk. We will cross the pine forest where, at its highest point, we will see twisted pine trees with very curious shapes due to the forces of air and snow. We will go up to the refuge of Poqueira, where we will spend the night and rest to ascend the Mulhacén the next day. Lunch and Poqueira accommodation included. Dinner and breakfast at the refuge not included.
DAY 5
After breakfast we will ascend the Mulhacén river to reach the Caldera lagoon at an altitude of 3000m. After a short break we will start the ascent to the summit. In our ascent, we will stop at the Deer Hill, where we will take a break and enjoy the views and the impressive walls of the Alcazaba and the Mulhacén with the Laguna de la Mosca at their feet. Once conquered its summit we will descend by the south slope towards La Hoya del Portillo in Capileria. Picnic and dinner at Arrijana included.
DAY 6
This is your free day and you may choose to visit Granada, and La Alhambra, a magnificent Moorish Palace (Tickets are not included, advance online booking is essential) which is just 1 hour 30 minutes away. You can also visit the beautiful village of Nerja, its Caves or go to the beach. There is also the option of a trip to Malaga to enjoy the view from La Alcazaba Fortress, the ruins of a Roman Theatre, to visit Museo Picasso or shopping in the old town or at the harbourside. And for those who would prefer to relax, there is always the option of a lazy day by the pool, in the Arabic tent or even self-guiding walks with our advice.
DAY 7
Today we aim for a half-day of canyoning in Río Verde. This canyon, in the Tejeda y Almijara Mountain Range, natural border between Granada and Malaga, is one of the best places to practice the descent of canyons in Spain and one of the most fun routes that can be done in the south of the peninsula. Among its virtues are the crystal clear waters, a sunny channel and a constant flow of water. Packed lunch and dinner at Finca Arrijana included.
DAY 8
The tour ends today and we take you back to Malaga airport after breakfast.
